Yields and soil chemical property changes in an intensive vegetable cropping system in the Sahel

Irrigated vegetable production is an important agricultural activity and a significant source of income for millions smallholder farmers in the Sahel. There little information on potential effects intensive using African Market Garden (AMG) technology yields soil chemical properties. Three contiguous 500-m2 plots were established to evaluate three management practices: (1) AMG, (2) Improved Management (IM), (3) Farmer Practice (FP). These practices arranged randomized block design. AMG IM produced higher as compared farmer practices. Tomato onion yield 50 300% than respectively; while FP consistently lower. The properties at end experiment displayed marked changes all treatments initial status. Except pH, which decreased by 0.2, 0.4, 1.1 pH units, respectively, FP, IM, increased direct response findings indicate that regular high rates manure application combined with mineral fertilizer enhance sandy fertility are developing sustainable Key words: Vegetable production, Drip irrigation, Farmer’s practice, Productivity, Soil fertility.
